A 20-Bore Flintlock Turn-Off Pistol
By James Freeman, London, Circa 1725

With two-stage cannon barrel, border engraved octagonal breech becoming polygonal and inscribed 'London' along the top flat, engraved tang secured by screws, border engraved action (cock replaced) with raised border around the pan and signed beneath the steel-spring, later figured flat-sided butt, and iron trigger-guard with shaped finial (some rust patination overall), London proof marks and indistinct maker's mark

James Paul Freeman was admitted to the freedom of the Gunmakers' Company on 5 July 1716, and in the same year took over the premises in St. Martins Lane previously occupied by Andrew Dolep. He was Master in 1732 and died in 1736. Both he and his son James are noted for their breech-loading pistols
