A 6-Bore Percussion Wildfowling Gun
By William Burnett, Southampton And Most Unusually Signed And Dated July 1 1844 By The Maker Under The Butt-Plate, No. 839

With rebrowned twist sighted barrel (some wear and scattered pitting overall) signed in script at the breech, recoloured recessed breech engraved with scrolling foliage and with pierced platinum plug, tang incorporating a back-sight and engraved with foliate scrollwork framing waterfowl in a landscape, signed border engraved flat lock (some rust patination) decorated en suite, dolphin hammer engraved with scrolling foliage, figured half-stock (some bruising) with chequered rounded pistol-grip, foliate scroll engraved recoloured mounts (some engraving refreshed) comprising butt-plate and trigger-guard, the latter with grip-safety inscribed 'Safety' and engraved with waterfowl in a landscape on the bow, trigger-plate with engraved pineapple-shaped finial, horn fore-end cap, vacant silver escutcheon, and brass-mounted ramrod, London proof marks

William Burnett of Southampton (active 1823-1851) specialised in the manufacture of guns suitable for wildfowling, including an 11-bore double-barrelled percussion gun (in the W. Keith Neal Collection) made for the famous Colonel Peter Hawker, who refers to it in his Diary (p. 275) as 'Bloody Burnett' and as 'my unrivalled cripple stopper'
