Footnotes

The original of this shield is in the Historisches Museum Dresden (No. E.709). The central scene relates to a design of Etienne Delaune, and represents the Roman General and author, Marcus Valerius Messall Corvinus (34 B.C. - A.D. 8), engaged in his legendary combat with a Gaulish warrior of great size and strength, in which he was aided by a crow or raven. It was from the latter that he acquired his sobriquet Corvinus (Latin for 'crow'). See Bruno Thomas, 'Die Münschner Waffenvorzeichnungen des Étienne Delaune und die Prunkschilde Heinrichs II. von Frankriech', Jahrbuch der Kunsthistorischen Sammlungen in Wien, 52 (1962), pp. 151-2, fig. 133
