The Hilt By John Simpson The Younger Of Glasgow, Early 18th Century, The Blade Dated 1658
With earlier tapering double-edged blade of hollowed diamond section, the forte etched on each side with a cavalryman on horseback between Latin inscriptions, one side including the date, and towards the hilt with foliage either side of a flattened medial panel deeply struck with a crowned anchor mark on one side, iron guard of fluted bars of rectangular section involving finely fretted incised panels pierced with circles and stylised hearts, the side panels each with 'ram's horn' terminal, and with an oval aperture for the reins, fore-guards, rear quillon stamped 'I.S' over 'G' within incised line borders and with scrolled wrist-guard, line engraved fluted conical pommel numbered '6'(?) over '34' and with separate button, and original spirally-grooved fishskin-covered grip (minor worming, shagreen worn, binding missing) retaining the remains of a woollen tassel beneath the pommel (some rust patination overall)
