An English Basket-Hilted Backsword
Mid-17th Century

With tapering blade cut with two narrow fullers along its back over most of its length on each side, each fuller indistinctly incised '1553' and with remains of a running wolf mark, iron 'Irish' guard of flattened bars each slightly swelling towards the centre and involving a rounded saltire on each side, slender fore-guards, fluted compressed bun-shaped pommel with turned button, and associated ornamentally turned hardwood grip (some wear and rust patination overall)
