An Unusual Scottish Basket-Hilted Broadsword
Second Quarter Of The 18th Century

With tapering blade double-edged over two thirds of its length and with double central fuller over most of its length on each side, each fuller stamped 'Andrea Farara' between 'X' marks towards the forte, rectangular ricasso, iron guard of flattened bars decorated overall with diagonal flutes between incised lines, framing shaped panels each with a St. Andrew's cross en suite and pierced with stylised hearts and circles, fore-guards (wrist-guard missing), conical pommel with separate button and decorated with flutes between incised lines, spirally-grooved fishskin-covered grip bound with silver ribbon (top ferrule replaced), and retaining an old buff leather liner faced with red woollen cloth
