A Fine Continental Ivory-Mounted Hunting Sword
19th Century, Almost Certainly Dieppe

With mid-18th century slightly curved tapering fullered blade (some wear and light pitting) double-edged towards the point and etched with a basket of foliage within the fuller on each side towards the forte, the forte on each side etched with a medallion containing a lion pierced by an arrow above the inscription 'Rien ne Marette', all against a ground of foliated strapwork and retaining very faint traces of gilding, ivory hilt comprising quillons carved in relief on the outside with a horned grotesque mask and foliage between addorsed mermaids each holding their tail, swelling grip carved with a foliated female demi-figure on the outside, and rounded pommel with a globe between cornucopia surmounted by a human head, the inner sides left plain, in original wooden scabbard covered in velvet (plush worn off) with ivory locket, chape and suspension mount facings each carved in relief with foliage and involving a raised ribboned mount, the locket centred on a horned bearded grotesque mask, the chape involving a monster
