Four Continental Hunting Hangers
All Mid-18th Century, The First With French Silver Marks

The first with slightly curved blade (some rust patination) double-edged towards the point and etched with a boar on one side and with a stag on the other, the forte etched on each side with maker's details 'Giverne Marchand Fourbyseur Des Deux Compres Des Mousquetaires Du Roy rue Vielle Bouderie a Lépeé Royalle a Paris' in an oval between foliated strapwork on a hatched ground, hilt comprising gadrooned recurved silver quillons, and spirally turned figured wooden grip of tapering oval section bound with silver ribbon (pommel-cap replaced), in later brass-mounted black leather scabbard; the second of similar form (blade worn and with some pitting), and wire-bound grip with fluted pommel-cap; the third with blade etched on each side of the forte with a standing figure of an armoured Pandour, a panel above surmounted by three crosses and etched 'Vivat Pandur', brass side-guard cast and pierced as a bird, and bone grip similar to the last (ribbon binding missing); the last retaining traces of etching on each side at the forte, partly fluted brass hilt with knuckle-guard, and wooden grip set with three fluted brass studs along one side (some wear overall) (4)
