Two Continental Steel-Hilted Small-Swords
Mid-Late 18th Century

The first with sharply tapering blade of hollow triangular section etched with rocailles and scrolling foliage along both sides of the forte, one side inhabited by a bird, the russet hilt engraved and gilt overall with trophies of arms inhabited on the underside of the shaped shell-guard by two birds, a hound and a monster, and grip bound with engraved and gilt steel ribbon and twisted copper wire (hilt with some wear overall); the second with sharply tapering blade of hollow triangular section with etched foliate decoration on both sides of the forte, hilt including oval shell-guard with gilt-copper liner pierced and chased with a foliate design, faceted knuckle-guard and ovoidal pommel, and grip bound with crimped copper ribbon and three sorts of twisted copper wire (some wear and rust patination overall) (2)
