A Halberd
Late 16th/Early 17th Century, Probably Italian

With double-edged spike of slightly hollowed flattened diamond section with sharply tapering point, the base of the blade roughly chiselled and gilt with a fortification and arms on each side, small crescentic axe-blade with small projection above and below, hooked fluke en suite, and both chiselled and gilt with foliage on each side, faceted socket retaining some gilding, and shortened side-straps, on associated wooden staff of octagonal section covered in red velvet (worn and damaged) studded overall with dome-headed brass nails
