An 1803 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword
Early 19th Century

With curved fullered blade (some rust patination) double-edged towards the point and etched and gilt at the forte with foliage, martial trophies, 'GR' crowned and royal arms and motto, the back with bladesmith's name 'J.J. Runkel, Solingen', regulation brass hilt retaining some gilding and comprising guard pierced with scrolls on each side, fluted knuckle-guard with pierced crowned cypher and ring for a sword-knot at the top, lion's head pommel with faceted back-piece, and later wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, in black leather scabbard with linear engraved brass locket and chape, the former with frog-stud and ring for suspension
