A Highly Unusual Silver-Mounted Caucasian Dagger And Suspension Straps
Russian Silver Marks, Late 19th/Early 20th Century

With finely watered double-edged blade reinforced at the point and cut with a short shallow central fuller on each side, the forte roughly chiselled with a trellised design on both sides, hilt comprising downbent rounded iron quillons, lightly carved curved rhinoceros horn grip of circular section with slender silver back-strap struck with silver marks and secured by a silver band at the base pierced with arabesques against a gilt ground, set on one side with a small silver roundel nielloed with a star, and with domed pommel-cap with button finial, in original wooden scabbard covered in black leather and carved to resemble a revolver cylinder at the top, deep nielloed silver chape of kindjal form embossed and chased with scrolling foliage in low relief on the outside, and nielloed spherical terminal, the black leather suspension straps with nielloed silver mounts cast and chased to resemble a Smith & Wesson revolver and rounds of ammunition
