An Ottoman Dagger, And A North African Dagger
The First Dated 1209 A.H. Corresponding To 1794 A.D.

The first of yataghan form, with single-edged blade dated and engraved with foliage on one side, nielloed parcel-gilt hilt with shaped extension over each side of the forte, and grip with characteristic 'eared' pommel, in original wooden scabbard covered in burgundy velvet (worn) with deep brass locket and chape each embossed and chased with foliage and rocailles, the former with suspension loop, the latter with monster-head terminal; the second with tapering double-edged blade (surface rust), waisted hilt with beaked white-metal basal mount and pommel each engraved with foliage centred on flowerheads, and short wooden grip, in its wood-lined scabbard of alternate punched copper and plain white-metal lines, locket en suite with the hilt and with a pierced mount on either side carrying a hinged ring for suspension (2)
