A pair of 12-bore single-trigger assisted-opening sidelock ejector guns by Boss & Co., no. 4693/4

The toplevers, ribs and forend-tips numbered '1' and '2' in gold, Boss patent single-triggers with rolled-edge trigger-guards, best bouquet and foliate-scroll engraving, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, highly-figured replacement stocks, the chopper-lump barrels (No. 1 sleeved by the maker and loose on action, No. 2 a replacement) with game-ribs engraved Boss & Co., 13 Dover Street, Piccadilly, London, the left barrel of the No. 1 gun engraved Sleeved by Boss & Co.
Weight 6lb. 13oz. (No. 1) and 6lb. 6¾oz. (No. 2), 14in. stocks, 28in. barrels, both approx. I.C. (No. 1) and ¼ (No. 2), 2½in. chambers, London nitro proof (No.2 gun right barrel-thickness marginal)

Footnotes

The makers have kindly confirmed that the guns were completed in 1901 for the Hon. Francis Egerton, and that replacement barrels 9551 and 9552 were fitted circa 1970. They have no record of the restocking.

Major Hon. Francis William George Egerton (1874-1948)
The second son of the 3rd Earl of Ellesmere, educated at Eton and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he was a Major in a Yeomanry regiment. Married in 1897, he had three children
