The collection was insured for £40,535. The collector, Sir John Day (1826-1908), was one of the first Catholic judges since the Reformation. His collection of Barbizon school paintings was considered one of the best in England, including important works by Corot, Millet, Daubigny, Diaz, Mauve, Maris and Whistler. It was dispersed by sale on 14 May 1909.
