NALSON PAPERS – LOVE LETTERS

Two autograph love letters signed ("Phi: Williams") by Philip Williams to Elizabeth ('Eliza') Nalson of Ely, expressing unbounded devotion as her "Eternal Votary" ("...she for whom I dyed & languished is at last pleased to own me & pity the clamorous object of her Charity... your Obliging Condescention has preserved a life whose greatest satisfaction & pleasure it will be to receive your Commands & whose greatest Glory it is to be owned by you..."), 2 pages, conjoint leaves, one with address-panel and seal on reverse and folded for delivery, small blank sections on the latter lacking, dust-staining and some wear at folds, but nevertheless both still attractive items, preserved in a purpose-made folding leather case, 16mo, 13 October 1687 and undated

Footnotes

These delightful letters were addressed by Philip Williams (died 1719) to his future wife Elizabeth, daughter of John Nalson (1637-1686), Rector of Doddington in the Isle of Ely. Nalson was author of An Impartial Collection of the Great Affairs of State (1682–3) and a significant collector of state papers, whose collections are preserved at the British Library, Bodleian and Cambridge University Library. Nalson died on 24 March 1686, with Williams taking over both the daughter and the living. Sold with a folding calf display case lettered in gilt "Love-Letters of Philip Wiliams 1687".
