MUSIC - EDWARD ELGAR

Autograph quotation signed ("Edward Elgar") of four bars from Strauss's Ein Heldenleben, headed "In remembrance of G.F. Watts... A noble theme for a noble man", inscribed in a defective copy of the Newnes Art Library G.F. Watts, with reproductions by Hollyer (some plates removed), publisher's cloth-backed boards, scuffed and torn, library sticker on spine, 4to, George Newnes, [c.1904], sold as an association copy

Footnotes

With the bookplate of Stanbrook Abbey and ownership inscription of Ernestine Anne. It was Strauss of course who in 1902 made a toast to 'the first English progressivist, Meister Edward Elgar'; while Elgar's Falstaff is widely seen as modelled on Ein Heldenleben. Stanbrook Abbey, until recently relocated, stood in what has become known as 'Elgar Country'.
