MUSIC - EDWARD ELGAR

Photograph of Elgar standing on the steps of Hereford Cathedral, full-length in a light suit, holding a hat and stick, signed in the image in green ink "Edward Elgar/ 1933" and by the photographer "Vivian of Hereford", glazed, wooden frame, size of image 490 x 390 mm., overall 630 x 530 cm., Hereford Cathedral, 1933

Footnotes

A LARGE AND STRIKING PHOTOGRAPH OF ELGAR, standing on the steps of Hereford Cathedral, probably in the last year of his life. 'Vivian of Hereford' was a photographic shop run by the sisters Gertrude and Ada Durrant; on the back of the frame is a note stating that the photograph was taken in 1933 and given to the owner in December 1967, and that Ada died in 1972 (she had been born in 1892 and her sister in 1882). It was probably taken when Elgar was at the Three Choirs Festival in the late summer of 1933, to conduct the Cello Concerto, Kingdom and Dream of Gerontius, five months before his death.
