Jessop Hulton, C.J. Cruttenden and S. B. Haines were members of an expedition, on board the East India Company's brig Palinurus, to explore nearly five hundred miles of the southern coast of Arabia. This volume, which belonged to Hulton's brother, includes their three accounts of the expedition, together with a manuscript description of Aden by John Crofton of the 6th Foot, which was stationed there in 1840-1842 before returning to quarters at Preston (home to the Hulton family, and where the journal was privately printed). Jessop Hulton, surgeon to the expedition, died of dysentery shortly after his return but his role - especially in relation to the collection of inscriptions - is handsomely acknowledged by his companions, and in the fine series of letters written to his brother by the Arabic scholar Charles Forster, whose The Historical Geography of Arabia was published in 1844. He notes that "I cannot repress the feeling of regret, that your distinguished brother, and poor Lieut. Wellsted should not have lived to know the inestimable value of the treasures of arabian antiquities which we owe to their zeal and energy".
