HENRY VIII

Document signed ("Henry R" at head), to Lord Windsor, Keeper of the Great Wardrobe, ordering him to summon Richard Gibson, son of the Sergeant at Arms, and with his advice and council "do cause our Toyle to bee sufficiently repayred in everything nedefull, so that it may bee with us the ixth day of this instant moneth of July", one page, on vellum , slight trace of seal, trimmed at the edges and slightly cockled, some dust-staining, but otherwise in reasonable and attractive condition, 160 x 220 mm., Hampton Court Palace, 1 July [1534]

Footnotes

The repair referred to may be for the canopy of state ("our Toyle" as in 'toile'). The work may have been undertaken in readiness for the trial of William, fourth Lord Dacre of the North, who had been accused of treason by Sir William Musgrave following the Scottish War of 1532-1534. He was tried by a panel of his peers on 9 July and unanimously acquitted.
