FLEMING (IAN)

Files relating to Ian Fleming's proprietorship of The Book Collector, kept by Ulrica Knowles, in her capacity as Ian Fleming's secretary, as well company secretary of the Collector Ltd., and the magazine's advertising manager, comprising:

(i) Typed letter signed ("Ian Fleming"), to Ulrica Knowles ("Dear Rica"), expressing doubts as to whether she can manage the Book Collector's advertising ("...John Hayward has been on to me once or twice and now I have a letter from James Shand saying he wrote to you on September 5th and has no acknowledgement. Copy has to be in by October 19th and so far nothing whatsoever has happened. Are you sure you are going to be able to handle this project?... Please be a good girl and straighten matters out without delay..."), one page, 4to, Kemsley House, 24 September 1956
(ii) Typed letter signed ("Ian Fleming"), to Ulrica Knowles ("Dear Rica"), congratulating her on her successful debut as advertising manager and apologising for his earlier panic ("...At lunch today we agreed that if you could get thirty pages on your first try, there was no reason why you shouldn't soon fill the entire magazine with advertising and then we wouldn't have to bother to think of anything else to put in it..."), one page, 4to, Kemsley House, 8 November 1956
(ii) Collection of incoming letters on Book Collector business, many addressed to Fleming in person, with carbon copies of outgoing letters, including original letters to Fleming by Percy Muir ("...It seems advisable to take some decisions about finance, as arrangements on this important question are a little casual at the moment..."), R.M. Butterworth (a gracious letter to Fleming, written after being replaced as advertising manager by Ulrica Knowles) etc.; with carbons of Fleming's letters to Desmond Flower ("...I am very sorry you didn't go in and visit Goldeneye. Next time you come fail not..."), John Hayward, James Shand of the Shenval Press, Wedlake & Saint ("...My reason for choosing the name The Charter Company Limited is because my wife is a Charteris and also because the word 'charter' has an adequate association with publishing and printing..."), Albert Erhman and Arthur A. Houghton Jr ("...I have just heard of your further generous contribution towards keeping The Book Collector alive..."); plus carbons of letters by Una, Fleming's secretary at Kemsley House, to Rica
(iii) Various notes and memoranda, some seemingly annotated by Fleming, relating to meetings, luncheons, etc.; with a memorandum on the financial position of the Book Collector, and related matter
