CORNWALL – TRELAWNY FAMILY

Collection of documents relating to the Trelawny family, comprising: a patent appointing Jonathan Trelawny Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, signed by John Grenville, Lord Lieutenant, 22 November 1660; two commissions signed by Grenville as Earl of Bath, High Steward of the Duchy and Lord Lieutenant, one appointing Jonathan Trelawny Captain of the Troops of Horse to be raised in Cornwall, the other appointing him Lieutenant, both 15 October 1661; a patent appointing John Trelawny Deputy Lieutenant, signed and sealed by Lord Bath (some loss to seal), 23 July 1672; together with a commission signed by George Lord Edgcumbe, Lieutenant of the county, appointing Sir Harry Trelawny his deputy, 10 July 1779, all vellum [from the Fairfax Papers]

Footnotes

The Jonathan Trelawny of the first three of these appointments appears to be the second Trelawny Baronet of Trelawne, Pelynt, Cornwall, who inherited the baronetcy in 1664 and died in 1681. He was father of Jonathan the third Baronet, one of the Seven Bishops imprisoned by James II and immortalized in R.S. Hawker's 'Song of the Western Men' with its famous refrain, "And shall Trelawny die?". The Trelawnys had been staunch supporters of the crown during the civil war, and these documents demonstrate the royal favour they enjoyed after the Restoration.
