COLLECTION

Group of autograph letters by George IV as Prince of Wales (“George P”), to his confidential agent [Jack] Payne, seemingly turning down a private offer to settle his debts, written on 17 July 1786 after having closed down Carlton House and moved to Brighton with his new (secret) bride, Mrs Fitzherbert (“…I can not help thinking myself in the light of a publick Character, the Charge of the whole Nation in general…”); Christopher Anstey, author of The New Bath Guide, thanking his correspondent for appointing his son Thomas to the collectorship of Salem; Sir Robert Kerr Porter, written from St Petersburg three months before his sudden death, declining on his sister Jane’s behalf a box at the Alexander Theatre; a lively letter by lady signed “H. Stanhope”, describing an all-night ball (evidently written in the 1830s); and a letter by Hallam, Lord Tennyson
