Footnotes

This volume bears the ownership inscription of "J.G. Green/ University Marshal/ University Offices/ The Old Schools/ Cambridge/ 1/10/46", and it was signed by Eisenhower and Montgomery when they collected their honorary degrees together on 11 October 1946. General Smuts, whose signature also appears, was installed as Chancellor of the University on 10 June 1948 and conferred honorary degrees on Churchill and others that same day. The album also includes signed letters by General Omar Bradley, Edith Evans and 'Rab' Butler concerning clothes to be worn at the ceremony (Bradley states that his height "is approximately six feet", while Dame Edith returns "the cap and gown by registered post with my most grateful thanks for the loan of them"; and Butler wonders "whether it would be possible for me to drive over to Cambridge some time to pick up the robes"). Myra Hess has written above her signature "A remembrance of the Senate House/ May 13th 1954".
