CHURCHILL (WINSTON)

Portrait, signed and dated on the mount (“Winston S. Churchill/ 1944”), bearing the legend ‘The Right Honourable/ Winston Spencer- Churchill, C.H., M.P./ Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury/ and Minister of Defence’, showing Churchill half-length in profile facing to the left, seated in an arm chair with a cigar in his left hand and a bundle of state documents resting on his knees, after the painting by A. Egerton Cooper RBA, by whom it has been signed and dated 1943, signatures in brown ink, very lightly sunned but still clear and legible, framed and glazed, overall 645 x 525 mm, 1944

'PORTRAIT OF VICTORY': A FINE LARGE WARTIME PORTRAIT OF CHURCHILL, signed by him in 1944. The original was painted in 1942 and exhibited at the Royal Academy the following year. It was bought by the insurance magnate Sir Edward Mountain and presented to the Carlton Club, with signed reproductions being made for distribution to a select few (see the statement by the artist's son quoted by Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, 'Churchill Portraits of Alfred Egerton Cooper' at the Churchill Centre and Museum at the Cabinet War Rooms website).
