BRAZIL and ARGENTINA

Two albums of views and portraits from Brazil and Argentina, upwards of 150 albumen and platinum prints, most mounted, some blindstamped, or signed and titled in negative, 19 mounted on photographer's printed mounts, a letter to Mr. Cheney at the Rio Grande Consulate (1896) loosely inserted, half morocco, oblong folio and photographer's cloth gilt portfolio entitled 'Album de vistas de Porto Alegre' with photographer's printed label pasted on inner cover, 4to, 1890s (2)

These albums contain not only topographical views but also extremely rare pictures from the "Federalist Revolution". The pictures in Bage in particular show the Federalist maragatos, led by Joca Tavares, building barricades in their base city against the "Woodpecker" followers of the Republican Amfa (Júlio Prates de Castilhos).

Images various sizes and include: Rio Grande do Sul (19, including armed militia during the revolution, the Piratiny Bridge, a bull fight, and a portrait of a gaucho); Bagé (11, including images of barricades and militia during the Siege of Bagé in 1893); Porto Alegre (33, including the floods in Azenha and other regions, 15 by Ferrari and Irmao and one by Domingos Bertolotti); Rio de Janeiro (23, including a view of the Grand Hotal at Botafogo); "R.G. Staff and families" (22); factories (2).
