WELLINGTON (ARTHUR WELLESLEY, first Duke of)

Series of some 25 autograph letters signed (“W”), to Lady Mildred Cecil (“My Dear Mildred”), subscribing himself “most affect[ionately]” and largely concerning social engagements, several addressed jointly to her and her sister, Lady Blanche; one to her mother, Lady Salisbury (1835), one written after her marriage (1844), nearly 30 pages, 8vo, London, mostly 1841-1842

Footnotes

Lady Mildred Cecil was eldest daughter of the second Marquess of Salisbury and sister of the prime minister; who was for many years a leading figure in London society. Nearly all these letters were written in the months before her marriage to the politician Beresford Hope on 7 July 1842; he being the stepson and heir of General Beresford (see above).
