STEINBECK (JOHN)

Autograph letter signed (“John”), to Bob [Condon], thanking him for his sympathy but assuring him he had no sadness at all (“...Never had a better time in my life. I wouldn’t have missed that road experience for anything. Even the beating was healthy and I’m not being a Pollyanna. It made me feel tough and young again... It occurs to me that nothing can be more disastrous than consistent success... it would take more strength of character than I have to constant series of successes...”), one page, on his usual lined US lawyer’s notepad paper, slight creasing and dust-staining, folio, 17 November [1951]

Footnotes

Written after the disastrous New Haven and Boston stage performances of Burning Bright late in 1950. The following year Steinbeck's strength of character was to be tested by the triumph of East of Eden. The recipient was an author, wit and man-about-town, and younger brother of Richard Condon, of Manchurian Candidate fame.
