George Pulman (1819–1880) was born in Axminster where the first edition of his influential Vade Mecum was published when he was only twenty-two. Included here are a copy inscribed to his mother, and two with extensive manuscript corrections and additions, presumably done in preparation for the second edition of 1851. The concept of dry fly fishing is mentioned for the first time in this work, Pulman suggesting that when "the wet and heavy fly be exchanged for a dry and light one, and passed in artist-like style over the feeding fish, it will... be taken, in nine cases out of ten, as greedily as the living insect itself".
