Maeda Shoun, born in Meiji 12 (1879), first studied wood carving under his father, a Buddhist sculptor, before being apprenticed to the celebrated carver Takamura Koun (1852-1934), himself the great revivalist of the Buddhist arts during the Meiji Period.
