A pair of silver cylindrical vases

By Tsuda Shinobu (1875-1946), dated Showa 8 (1933)
Both vases cast in high relief with an uguisu within a recessed oval panel, the base with an inscription Hyosho Showa hachinen nigatsu juichi-nichi Tokyo Fu Taiju, with tomobako, the lid signed Taiju, the inside of the lid with an inscription by the original owner. Both 29.6cm (11 5/8in) high. (3).

鶯図銀花瓶 一対 津田信夫 昭和8年(1933年)

Tsuda Shinobu, born in Chiba prefecture, studied metal casting at Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Tokyo University of the Arts). He was also actively involved in the government project for public facilities including the design of Nihonbashi bridge and the fountain in Hibiya park, Tokyo. He studied Art Déco in Europe from 1923, and was part of the judging committee at the Paris Exposition in 1925. His other metal works are also in the collection of The University Art Museum and the prefectural museums in Chiba.
