A roiro lacquer four-case inro

By Toyo(sai) Hideyuki, 19th century
Decorated in gold, silver and iro-e takamakie and aogai with the head and shoulders of the Rokkasen on a rich nashiji ground; signed Sofu Kanshosai no kinbyo wo narau, Toyo Hideyuki with kakihan; with gold lacquer manju netsuke decorated in low relief with three rabbits among grasses, signed with seal Cho/Chu; with wood storage box. 7.1cm (2¾in) high. 六歌仙図蒔絵印籠 銘桃葉秀之 19世紀

The Rokkasen are a group of Japanese poets cited in the classical poetic compilation kokin Wakashu as the Six Poetic Geniuses of the period. They consist of Otomo Kuronushi, Ono no Komachi, Ariwara no Narihira, Kisen Hoshi, Sojo Henjo and Bunya no Yasuhide.
