Decorated in gold and iro-e takamakie and togidashi with two ladies in a boat dressed in Chinese robes on an outing to gather lotus leaves and buds, a lotus pond depicted on the other side; signed Gyonen nanaju o Toju with kakihan, with wood manju netsuke carved with Autumnal flowers and cloisonné enamel ojime, with wood storage box. 9.7cm (3¾in) high. Toju was the most prominent of Iizuka Toyo's pupils and is normally considered to have been his successor. He worked at the turn of the 18th/19th century and was a fine, prolific and versatile artist, see E. A. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists, p.292.
