In the form of a gunbai uchiwa, bearing a kinji ground lightly sprinkled with gold dust, elaborately decorated in typical Shibayama style with a continuous interior scene depicting several figures, one side portraying a couple beseeching a shichiya (pawnbroker) to possibly delay payment for their son's sword, the wealthy household shows a hanging scroll and ikebana arrangement in the tokonoma in the background, the reverse with servants on the engawa gesticulating at the unwelcome visitor; with discreet details rendered in togidashi e-nashiji, with gold lacquer two-part manju netsuke similarly embellished in iro-e takamakie and e-nashiji with a pheasant in a garden; signed in a mother-of-pearl reserve Shibayama, with wood storage box. 12.1cm (4¾in) high.
