The cover decorated in gold takamakie, aogai and e-nashiji with butterflies hovering amidst clumps of chrysanthemums, the interior embellished with tight asa-no-ha designs inlaid in aogai over a brown lacquer ground, fitted with an inkstone and a lacquered wood suiteki in the form of a butterfly; unsigned. 16½cm x 14½cm (6½in x 5¾in). The fundo is an ancient weight used by merchants in feudal Japan to weigh pieces of gold or silver hence why the form is associated with the symbol of wealth and is part of the takaramono repertoire.
