A Wajima nuri roiro lacquer ryoshibako and cover

By Mae Fumio (b.1940), Showa Period
Decorated in the chinkin technique with a flock of sparrows in flight amidst tall stems of bamboo, the design of which extending down to the sides of the cover; the drops of dew on the bamboo leaves discreetly inlaid in gold studs, with a lacquered stand and tomobako the inside of the lid signed Fumio saku with seal Fumio. 11cm x 24cm x 14½cm (4 5/8in x 9½in x 5¾in). 竹雀図沈金漆箱(風韻) 前史雄 昭和時代

Mae Fumio studied under the guidance of his father, Mae Tahiho in the field of Chinkin. He gained several prestigious awards which included the Education Minister's Award in the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1973 and the 51st Hokkoku Cultural Award in 1997 before being designated (like his father) a 'Living National Treasure' in 1999.
