The story of Abraham and the Three Angels is taken from Genesis 18, verses 1-19:
While Abraham sits at his tent door, three men appear before him; realising they are angels, Abraham bows before them, washes their feet, and with the traditional hospitality of the nomad, offers them food. The angels prophesy that Sarah, Abraham's wife, will bear him a son, a prophecy which is fulfilled when Isaac is born.
The three angels are traditionally regarded as symbols of the Trinity and their prophecy a prefiguration of the annunciation.
