LITERATURE:
Helen Allingham and Stewart Dick, The Cottage Homes of England, Edward Arnold, (London, 1909), ill. pl. 62, opp p. 224.
During the early years of the 20th century Helen Allingham visited Salisbury and painted in and around Downton, a market town with a thriving tanning industry. Most of her paintings resulting from these excursions were of thatched buildings, three of which were reproduced in The Cottage Homes of England, together with this one landscape. The view is from Barford Down across to Clearbury Rings, being the highest and most historically important hill in the area.
By this stage in her career, the artist's ever-popular work was admired by both the King and Queen Mary, when they attended a private view at The Fine Art Society in 1908.
We are grateful to Annabel Watts for her kind assistance in preparing the above catalogue entries.
