A Rare Viking Axe
Probably Danish, Late 11th Century

In excavated condition, with long narrow iron head widening towards the concave cutting-edge, the latter with slender border of inlaid silver dots within silver lines on each side, rounded block-shaped socket cut with a fluted cross on each side and inlaid in silver with four triangular designs of dots and curved double lines, two centred on a lozenge, and two involving a pair of scrolls
16.2 cm.
