A Fine And Rare Cased Pair Of 15-Bore Over-And-Under Saw-Handled Flintlock Officer's Pistols

With browned twist barrels each with gold-lined touch-hole, the upper barrels with gold line and fore-sight, and signed at the breech on gold-inlaid foliate scrolls along the top flat, the lower barrels with under-rib carrying the ramrod-pipes, case-hardened tangs finely engraved with a martial trophy and foliage, case-hardened border engraved flat bevelled locks each signed in a gold-inlaid oval set against a gold club of Hercules crossed with a banner, decorated with a starburst and with a martial trophy on the stepped tail, and each with safety-catch, roller, semi-rainproof pan, and engraved 'French' cock, figured butts with chequered rounded grips and flat oval pommels, the latter each encircled by a silver band and inlaid with a silver shield-shaped escutcheon bearing the crest of Wingfield, Viscounts Powerscourt, blued square-backed border engraved steel trigger-guards each decorated with a martial trophy on the bow, original horn-tipped ramrods, and much original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including Sykes brass-mounted three-way flask retaining much of its original lacquered finish, unusual steel tool-kit of oval section covered in green leather, pan-brush, mainspring-clamp, and iron bullet mould, the interior of the lid with trade label of Samuel Nock for 1837-1852, the exterior with flush-fitting folding brass carrying handle, London proof marks

Samuel Brunn took over John Knubley's business at 7 Charing Cross on his death in 1795 and continued the business in his name until 1797. He is recorded under his own name as Sword Cutler & Gunmaker at 55 Charing Cross between 1798 and 1804 and was at 56 Charing Cross between 1805 and 1820. He was appointed Sword Cutler and Gunmaker to the Prince of Wales, 1800-11; the Prince Regent, 1812-1820; and Contractor to Ordnance, 1797-1809. Samuel Brunn is the maker of the pair of elaborate silver-mounted neoclassical pistols of 1800, probably made for the Prince Regent, and now in the Metropolitan Museum of art, New York (inv. nos. 1992.330.1,2)
