An Unusual Far Eastern Sword
Late 19th Century, Probably Korean

With slender very slightly curved single-edged blade (point reduced) with etched decoration (worn) over most of its length on each side, silver-mounted copper hilt decorated with inlaid silver and brass foliage and comprising slender knuckle-guard extending to form a flat downcurved rear quillon inlaid in silver with two characters or Kanji, swelling grip, and silver pommel embossed and chased as a dragon's head, in original copper scabbard en suite with the hilt, the silver locket, chape and suspension mount embossed and chased with dragons, Ho-ho birds, tortoises and foliage, and with two small rings for suspension; together with a Galerie Fischer Waffenauktion sale catalogue, 24 May 1983, in which a similar sword is included as lot 239 (2)
