Of brass, comprising two symmetrical flat halves hinged at one end and finely engraved with scales for 'Quantity of Powder for filling the Chambers of Brass Mortars & Howitzers' and marked out in inches for sea and land on one side, and for 'Brass Guns' over 'Proof Service', 'Shot', 'Iron Guns' over 'Proof Service' and inscribed 'Capt.n. John Campbelle', 'Coast Artillery' on the other, hinged from '0' to '180' degrees, and marked with a 12 in. rule (steel tips missing, minor surface patination)

Footnotes
John Campbell joined the army on 13 July 1795 as a Gentleman Cadet and achieved the rank of 2nd Captain on 20 July 1804. He died at Port Royal, Jamaica on 30 May 1805
