A Swept-Hilt Rapier
Early 17th Century, Probably Italian

With sharply tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section with short central fuller on each side of the forte extending from the ricasso, the former struck 'IHS' between star marks, and the latter struck with indistinct letters also between star marks on one side, hilt of slender bars of circular section comprising guard of two side-rings on each side with central mouldings and above an asymmetrical double shell attached by rivets, each shell embossed with a lion-mask, slender arms and recurved quillons, the latter each with fluted swelling tip and button terminal, fig-shaped pommel of octagonal section with button finial, and later wire-bound grip retaining two original brass wire Turk's heads (some wear and rust patination)
