An English 'Mortuary' Hilted Broadsword
Mid-17th Century

With tapering double-edged blade with indistinct inscription within the slender fuller on each side of the forte, an incised running wolf mark beyond on one side, and an orb and cross mark on the other, hilt comprising guard pierced and chiselled with four portrait busts between sea-monsters, slender knuckle-guard connected to two side-bars by double scrolled bars chiselled with foliage and screwed to the globular pommel, the last chiselled with foliage and with button finial, a further diagonal to the rear of each side-bar joining the scrolled wrist-guard, and grip wrapped in leather (some wear and rust patination overall)
