A gilt-bronze figure of Shakyamuni Buddha

18th century
The historical buddha cast seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus pedestal with hands held in dharmacakramudra, wearing long layered robes elaborately chased with wide foliate borders simulating a patch-work design, the robe covering his broad shoulders leaving his chest bare, his face with a contemplative expression, framed by pendulous earlobes and rows of studs representing curls, fitted box.

Footnotes

The mudra exhibited by this figure is called the dharmacakramudra, 'Wheel of the Law'. It is considered a gesture of teaching and used by Shakymuni Buddha during his first sermon at Deer Park in Sarnath.
