A gilt-bronze figure of a dharmapala

17th century
Portrayed standing in alidha, with hands crossed in front of him at chest level, grasping a vajra in one and a bell in the other, his fearsome face framed by a five-leaf diadem, large earrings and a vajra necklace, his body naked except for an animal skin tied loosely round his waist and elaborate inlaid jewellery and chains, metal stand.
18cm (7in) high. (2).

Footnotes

The vajra, or thunderbolt symbolises action, while the bell symbolises wisdom. As action and wisdom should always be employed in unity, so the vajra and bell are never parted or employed separately.
