Seated cross-legged in lalitasana on a double lotus throne framed by beaded borders, the hands held in dharmacakrapravartana holding the stems of lilies flanking the shoulders with the left supporting the prajnaparamitasutra, the face with eyes downcast in a serene expression, crowned with an elaborate foliate tiara encircling the high chignon set with a jewelled ornament, adorned with disc and foliate earrings, necklaces, bracelets and a belt, all set with turquoise stones, wearing a dhoti flowing onto the throne and incised with lotus and lingzhi fungus sprays and floral scrolls. 50.4cm (19¾in) high.

Manjushri is the embodiment of Prajnaparamita, the Perfection of Wisdom, and is considered to be the essence of using knowledge as the means to enlightment, as is reflected in the present example by the presence of the prajnaparamitasutra, the Book of Knowledge.
The present lot is constructed of a cast figure and ornaments with attached stems, set upon a repoussé pedestal. Compare a related gilt-bronze figure of Manjushri, with cast figure and repoussé base and ornaments, sold in these rooms, 26 February 2008, lot 88.
