A gilt-bronze phurba

15th century
The faceted-triangular blade, edged by flame borders, topped by three joined-makara heads, beneath an ambrosia vase-form handle, surmounted by a pommel cast in the form of a Yamantaka head with flaming hair surrounded by seven smaller Mahakala heads, all topped by the head of a buddha, box.

Footnotes

This Tibetan ritual dagger has its origins as an ancient Vedic tool used to tether sacrifical animals to the ground. The phurba is used in rituals to create stability and to delineate areas of ritual space.
