Footnotes
Padmasambhava, whose name means 'Lotus Born', is said to have transmitted Tantric Buddhism to Bhutan and Tibet in the 8th century. He came to Tibet from India in 817 CE at the invitation of King Trisong Deutsan (742-797). Later, in collaboration with the great Bodhisattva Abbot Shantarakshita, he built the Samyey monastery, which became a principal centre of learning where many important Buddhist texts were first translated into Tibetan. The Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism traces its origins to Padmasambhava, and its followers regard him as the second Buddha.
