A rare gilt-bronze figure of Shakyamuni Buddha

6th century
The seated figure with the right hand raised and the left resting on his knee with the palm open, the face modelled with a benevolent expression flanked by pendulous earlobes below the high usnisha, wearing long flowing robes revealing the dhoti tied above the waist, the front applied with gold except for the hair and usnisha.

Footnotes

The present lot is related in the modelling of its usnisha, face and robes to stone sculptures dated to the 6th century. Compare a limestone stele from the Beurdeley collection, dated to the Northern Wei dynasty, illustrated by the Chinese Porcelain Company, Ancient Asian Sculpture, New York, 1991, Catalogue no. 6; and another stele, from the von der Heydt collection, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, dated as probably middle of the 6th century, illustrated by O. Sirén, Chinese Sculptures in the von der Heydt Collection, Zurich, 1959, Catalogue no. 23.
